Power of Language

Understanding … Communication … A tool that one uses to interact with others.

Around the globe, there are different nations with different languages spoken.  Some are quite diverse for they have been visited by different races. Nevertheless, a country has only one dominant language used.

It’s that time of the year again. The month of Augustus Caesar wherein we celebrate the making of our language, it’s background and lots more.  Every single year, we Filipinos, celebrate our Buwan ng Wika, which translates to Month of Language or Language Month whenever it is already the eighth month of the year. Just like in the previous month’s celebration (which was Nutrition Month), there are lots of activities and programs to let the youth know more about the importance of having a certain language that unites the countrymen which also includes our land’s diverse and colorful culture.

This year’s theme is: “Wikang Katutubo: Tungo sa Isang Bansang Filipino." If you would connect the series of dots together, you’ll get the deeper meaning of it. When translated, it would be Native Language: Towards a Philippine Country. I perceive it as it is. Also, because of the Philippines’ diverse culture, many native languages were top picks to be the country’s national language.

As the month celebration encourages fellow youth to join in the celebration, sometimes it also has its downside. One which I observe is that once the month ended, it snaps us back to reality that they only remember doing that when others also do it. This should not be a habit for it’s like we only remember something when someone reminds us to. Every day or once in a while we should think of why we should be grateful for having such language for us to be able to communicate with fellow Filipinos from different regions of the country and for our great culture as well.

If there is no  single language that would unite the people then no signs of development would be seen.
