Heritage From the Past
Culture and heritage.
Kannawidan is an Ilocano term which means feast of heritage and culture. This year marks the 202nd foundation of the province that separated from Ilocos Norte by a Royal Decree on February 2,1818.
Kannawidan is
an annual celebration of the province of Ilocos Sur. This festival of Ilocanos aims to restore the habit they have and showcase their inheritance from preceding generations. Kannawidan is derived from the Ilocano term "tawid" meaning inheritance.
Highlights of this festival are the Saniata ti Ilocos Sur, Saniata ti Agtutubo ,and the recently added Kannawidan Street Dancing and Showdown last 2016. Saniata is a pageant where beautiful young ladies represent their hometown and compete in different categories. Same is through with Saniata ti Agtutubo, the only difference is that this pageant is for cute little girls. The street dancing and showdown is where the representatives of towns face off for the different prizes waiting and to show to the audience their "tawid".
Every heritage and culture is to be known by many. Stories to be passed down to the succeeding generations to come and hopefully they can witness the inheritance that our ancestors have presented us.
